Safe Schools Coalition Victoria receives a mention in United Nation report!
Human rights organisations and anti-homophobia projects from around the world welcomed the release of the first ever United Nations report on human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity.
The report, released last week by the UN Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, documents widespread discrimination and violence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people worldwide and calls on governments to end these human rights violations. It further called on governments to implement their commitments and obligations under international law, by protecting the rights of GLBTI people and by enacting comprehensive anti-discrimination laws.
The report also recognised successful initiatives that have been developed to counter homophobia and transphobia, including the work done in schools. Safe Schools Coalition Victoria being one of the initiatives mentioned in the report as leading the way!
This United Nations resolution marked a significant victory for anti-homophobia campaigners and activists who have worked tirelessly over the decades.
