School Experience for Children of Gay and Lesbian Parents - Family Matters - Journal Article

Research suggests that the children of gay and lesbian parents have similar psychological adjustment to children growing up in more traditional family structures. Nevertheless,these children may face some particular
challenges.

In this article, VIVIEN RAY AND ROBIN GREGORY explore the school experiences of a small sample of children of gay and lesbian parents. They identify some common difficulties these children confront,and suggest some possible approaches to overcoming them.

'Teaching Diversities: Same Sex-Attracted Young People, CALD communities and Arts based Community Education' Report

'Teaching Diversities' is a 2011 research report released by Victoria University in collaboration with the Centre for Multicultural Youth. The research was a community consultation of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) young people on their experiences of sexual diversity and homophobia.

Gender Questioning (GQ) 2010 Booklet

Our 'Gender Questioning' or GQ booklet is aimed at people aged 16 to 25, but would suit older people, who are questioning their gender or feel like the gender assigned to them at birth doesn't fit.

The booklet is also useful for anyone working with a gender questioning young person, as it includes a glossary of key terms, advice on how to support someone who is questioning their gender, and an updated resource and referral list.

New research into the impact of homophobic bullying

Critical new research has found that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth who experience high levels of school victimization in middle and high school report impaired health and mental health in young adulthood, including depression, suicide attempts that require medical care, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and risk for HIV. This is the first known study to examine the relationship between school victimization during adolescence – specifically related to sexual orientation and gender identity – with multiple dimensions of young adult health and adjustment.

BEYOND ‘THAT’S SO GAY’

In 2010, with the support of Uniting Care – Cutting Edge (UCCE), Daniel Witthaus, a gay rights advocate and education activist, born and raised in regional Australia, undertook a mission to eliminate homophobia in Australia. He embarked on a 38 week journey all around rural Australia, taking his anti-homophobia training, called Beyond That’s So Gay’, to schools, organizations and individuals. Over the year, Daniel Witthaus collected everyday stories from LGBT Australians. Summaries of the findings from Part Two: Schools, can now be downloaded below.

Reconsidering Normal: Queering Social Norms for Parents and Teachers

American study published in Vol. 20, No. 4 of Teaching Education Journal. The study, rooted in queer theory, explores the social norms teachers name for parenting in school settings and the way teachers position LGBT parents within these norms. Findings point to social norms for teachers and parents which indicate that teachers operate within heteronormative frameworks. They consider heterosexuality to be normal, while positioning LGBT identities as deviant.
